Wool, work, and time

Judy works with Lamb's Pride wool — 85% wool, 15% mohair. Each piece is knitted by hand, then felted into a dense, durable fabric.

These are not delicate hats. With ordinary care, Judy's work sees 10 to 15 years of wear.

One-of-a-kind pieces made to be worn

Her signature two-tone band is her own original design.

Made in Vermont

Judy Hella learned to knit at four years old. She raised two children in Essex and now lives in Eden with her husband, Will. She has five grandchildren, and much of what she makes begins with them in mind.

For thirty years she has brought her work to Vermont craft shows. She makes about 150 hats a year, felts each one by hand, and has taken more than a dozen blue ribbons at the Champlain Valley Exposition.

Her work is meant to be worn through real winters, not saved for special occasions.
